Career Fair Season Is Here — Nail Your Elevator Pitch With These 3 Tips!
Share
Career fair season is amongst us, and we’re back with more helpful tips! First impressions matter — a lot — which is why today, we’re focusing on elevator pitches.
An elevator pitch is a short, impactful introduction of yourself. It’s your chance to highlight what you bring to the table, what you’re looking for in an opportunity, or even ask a thoughtful question that shows your interest. In a busy career fair environment, having a strong elevator pitch can help you stand out — in the right way.
Why does this matter so much? Because first impressions are tough to change. When you walk up to a booth, you want the recruiter to think: “Wow — this student is impressive,”
not be distracted by a rambling or unprepared introduction.
So how do you craft a memorable elevator pitch? Let’s dive into three essential tips:
- Dress to Impress. Before you even say a word, employers are already forming an impression — based on your appearance. Looking polished and professional shows that you’re serious and prepared. Need some inspiration? We posted a blog last week with outfit tips for career fairs - check it out here.
- Know What You Want to Say. Preparation is key. Most schools release a list of employers attending the fair — use it! Make a shortlist of the companies you’re most interested in.
- Do some quick research to learn what they do and what values they stand for.
- Use that information to tailor your elevator pitch to each company.
Example Elevator Pitch:
“Hi, my name is Sarah, and I’m a Marketing student. I’m excited to learn more about Talent Coaching and Consulting because I really value your emphasis on service. Could you tell me more about how that plays into your company culture?”
This approach shows enthusiasm, preparation, and invites a real conversation.
3. Practice, Practice, Practice. Confidence comes from repetition. Once you’ve crafted your pitch, practice it — out loud, in front of a mirror, with a friend, or by recording yourself. The more you practice, the more natural and confident you’ll sound when it’s time to deliver it at the fair.
As always, we’re cheering you on and wishing you the best of luck this fall. Go into those career fairs confident, prepared, and ready to make a lasting impression.
