What to Wear to a Fall Career Fair: Outfit Tips & Inspiration

Fall Career Fair season is here, and while landing an internship or job is the ultimate goal — let’s be real: figuring out what to wear shouldn’t be another stressor on your list. That’s why we’re here to help!

Over on our Instagram (@talentcoachco), we shared 6 outfit ideas to help spark inspiration for what to wear to a career fair this fall. In this post, we’re offering some quick tips to help guide your wardrobe choices — but for visual examples, be sure to check out our Instagram!

✅ Career Fair Outfit Tips:

  • Jeans are totally okay – just be sure to dress them up with a polished top or nicer shoes to elevate the look.
  • Clean sneakers are fair game. They're becoming increasingly acceptable at career events. Just make sure they’re in good shape and look intentional, not like you just came from the gym.
  • If you wear a skirt, opt for a length that’s appropriate and professional — nothing too short. You want your outfit to leave a good impression, not be a distraction.
  • Same goes for tops — avoid anything too low-cut or revealing. Keep it classy and comfortable.
  • Skip loud or clanky jewelry. If you use your hands while talking (like most of us do), it can be distracting in conversation.
  • Avoid shorts, flip-flops, or slide sandals. Even if it’s warm out, these are too casual for a professional setting and can instantly leave the wrong impression.
  • Aim for business casual. Think smart, put-together, and professional — not formal, but definitely more elevated than your day-to-day class attire.

Real talk: We've been to career fairs where students showed up in gym shorts and slides -and unfortunately, they didn't get a great reception from recruiters.

You don’t have to spend a lot to look great. The outfits we featured on Instagram were from Walmart and averaged around $20 per piece — budget-friendly and career-ready.

Thrifting is another solid option. You can find amazing, professional pieces for a fraction of the cost. Also, some universities and career services offer free or discounted clothing programs to help students prepare for events like this. Definitely check to see what resources your school provides.

Final Thoughts:

Remember, your outfit should support your confidence, not distract from it. When you look polished and feel comfortable, you’re more likely to show up with energy, professionalism, and authenticity — and that’s what leaves a lasting impression.
