Why Soft Skills Matter

Harvard Business Review recently published a thought-provoking article highlighting a critical shift in today’s workplace: soft skills are no longer optional—they’re essential.

But what exactly are soft skills?

Soft skills, often called people skills, refer to the way we interact, communicate, and collaborate with others. Unlike technical or “hard” skills, soft skills influence how effectively you work with your team, manage change, and navigate complex challenges.

As AI continues to automate technical tasks, it’s the human side of work—how we connect, adapt, and lead—that will set us apart.

One quote from the article that truly stood out to us was:

“According to our new research, foundational skills—like collaboration, mathematical thinking, and adaptability—may prove much more important for both individuals and companies.”

So, what does this mean for you?

It means soft skills are no longer “nice to have.” They’re must-haves—and it’s time to make them a top priority in your personal and professional development.

Here are three essential soft skills we believe everyone should continuously strengthen:

1. Communication - Whether you're writing an email or presenting in a meeting, strong communication skills are essential in any workplace.

Ways to strengthen your communication skills:

  • Join a Toastmasters club or participate in a speech contest
  • Enroll in courses that include presentations or public speaking
  • Take a professional writing class or workshop

2. Collaboration - Very few roles operate in isolation. The ability to work well within a team—and contribute meaningfully—is critical for success.

Ways to strengthen your collaboration skills:

  • Join an intramural sports team or recreational league
  • Participate in a book or craft club to engage with diverse perspectives
  • Enroll in a course with group projects or team-based learning

3. Leadership - Leadership isn’t just for managers. Whether you're leading a project or mentoring a colleague, these skills can be developed at any stage in your career.

Ways to strengthen your leadership skills:

  • Take on a leadership role in a student or professional organization
  • Volunteer to lead initiatives within your community or workplace
  • Join a board or committee that aligns with your interests
